Around the world, 33.3 million people are living with HIV. Approximately 22.5 million live in Sub-Saharan Africa. WUSC’s goal is to help combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases that stand in the way of sustainable development. In support of Millennium Development Goal #6 which aims to not only halt, but to also begin to reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS by 2015, WUSC contributes to education, care, treatment and support efforts by:

  • integrating reproductive health workshops for young girls in Ghana and Kenya
  • collaborating with the Government of Botswana to develop national prevention strategies and programs for youth;
  • building the capacity of local organizations in Botswana, Malawi and Burkina Faso to improve their ability to integrate and promote gender equality between women and men in HIV and AIDS activities and services;
  • improving access to care for people living with HIV and AIDS in Malawi and increase awareness of Canadians on the issue through the Bike for AIDS campaign;
  • increasing access to prevention and quality support services and promoting income-generating activities for people affected with HIV and AIDS in Burkina Faso.

Volunteer overseas to help local organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa to support their response to HIV and AIDS. Donate or spread the word through the Bike for AIDS campaign in your own community to raise awareness about the issue.
